Lights, camera, action!
This blog is just for you, movie-loving tweens! Here you will find a small but entertaining collection of films that are all joined by one common thematic thread: coming of age. What does “coming of age” mean, you ask? Well, the meaning may be interpreted differently for everyone but it generally refers to all the good, the bad, and the ugly experiences gained and choices made when we are young. In the end these experiences and decisions are what make you YOU!
If we were to get academic for a moment, it could be said that coming of age films are rooted in a German literary tradition known as “bildungsroman.” Bildungsroman novels always carry the same message, that change is extremely important. Without change people cannot learn, move forward, or even gain an identity.
For a great example of a bildungsroman novel, read Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story, that’s right, the book that inspired the movie with the same name!

The films included in this collection feature tweens and teens who have had to endure challenging situations. Like you, the protagonists are on the road towards empowerment and independence. We hope that you will jump in and enjoy the journey with them, as they learn, mature, and inspire those around them.
If you are a parent, educator, or librarian, please visit the "Encore" tab to find out more about how these films can enhance learning.
